HIGH ALCOHOL INTAKE AFFECTS OUR MENTAL HEALTH.

ANN : JULY 16, 2020

Mental health practitioner Emmanuel Aboagye Appiah has stated  people who consume high amounts of alcohol are vulnerable to increased risk of developing mental health problems and cautioned the public against its intake and other related drugs in this era of COVID-19.

He disclosed this to C.O Sly on Homebase television morning show “EBOBORBA. “

It is estimated that 650,000 people out of Ghana’s population are suffering from a severe mental disorder and a further 2,166, 000 are suffering from a moderate to mild mental disorder.

With relatively less government provision and funding for general psychiatric hospital and primary health care based services, Emmanuel Aboagye Appiah said the few community based services being provided are private and is not enough to move those on the streets to a reputable mental health institutions.

Justifying why chronic alcohol intake can increase mental illness, the mental health practitioner said depression in the era of COVID-19 can led most people with low mental fortitude to resort to the intake of alcohol and other hard drugs to stimulate the body.

This he said affects the pleasure sector of the brain.

He however entreated the public to help seek early medical treatment for relations since prolonged mental illness cannot be cured but rather managed.
